Baltimore Where Art Thou? Oh, There You Are!

2013 Topps Baltimore Orioles Base Card[/caption]When Topps released it’s 30 cards from 30 teams preview for 2013 Topps a few days ago, Baltimore was mysteriously missing. Well, for all of you Orioles fans out there, we finally have an Oriole card for your enjoyment.

2013 Topps Pics From Each Team (except Baltimore)

Topps has teased is with images from 2013 Topps. Here is a card from 29 out of 30 teams. Topps left out the Orioles (maybe they are mad that the Ravens are playing in the AFC championship game today and are taking it out on Orioles fans?). Amazing photography, sharp design, and there will be loads of inserts. Release date is January 30. Do you think some might make their way out the back door prior to then?

2013 Topps Series 1 Insert Set Checklists

2013 Topps 1972 Topps Mini Buster Posey

2013 Topps 1972 Topps Mini Buster Posey

It’s almost time to chase those 2013 Topps inserts. Most of the insert sets should not be too difficult to complete if you buy a few boxes and are willing to do a little old fashion trading…OK it should be easy to pick them up on eBay for you collectors that gave up on trading many eons ago.

Take a peek at the top non-auto/non-relic 2013 Topps insert cards on eBay right now!

The Chasing History set will feature 50 cards of players who chased (or are still chasing) some historical mark. Chasing the Dream consists of 25 cards of young players chasing their dream of becoming hero’s in the big leagues. Cut to the Chase is a 25 card die cut chrome set. The Greats set is a hobby exclusive 30 card set of high end cards featuring some of the greatest players to ever play, and there will also be a gold parallel set numbered out of 99. The Calling Cards set will highlight 15 players with unique routines they are known for. Unfortunately, no Mark Fydrich card in the set. The mini set this year showcases the 1972 Topps design, one of my all time favorites.

Updated 2013 Topps Series 1 Checklist

2013 Topps Bryce Harper Base Card

2013 Topps Bryce Harper Base Card

***Update: Topps has given us some new concrete (OK soft concrete) info on the checklist***

We are just a couple of weeks away from release of this years flagship product from Topps, but we still don’t have a complete checklist. For now, only a teaser checklist has surfaced with about one third of the base set and only names, no corresponding card numbers.

As has become the standard, the 2013 Topps Series one checklist will eventually consist of 330 cards. In addition to the rookies and veterans, you will find League Leader cards as well as League MVP, Rookies of the Year, World Series Highlight, Cy Young winners and Record Chasers cards.

We all know there are a crazy amount of parallel sets in Topps mainstream set every year, and 2013 is no exception. The following are the parallel sets:

- Gold Parallel: Numbered to 2013.
- Black Parallel: Numbered to 62. Hobby/Jumbo exclusive.
- Pink Parallel: Numbered to 50.
- Platinum Parallel: One of one.
- Emerald Foil Parallel: Found 1 in six packs.
- Desert Camo Foil Parallel: Numbered to 99.
- Base Card Printing Plates: There are four different colored plates for each base card, and each is one of one. 1,320 printing plates total. Each is on. Hobby/Jumbo exclusive
- Silk Collection: 100 Framed mini silk cards that are numbered to 50. Hobby/Jumbo exclusive.

Here is what we have been given for the base set so far:

Lucky 2013…….Topps That Is

It’s all about the chase! Chasing the Pennant! Chasing cards for your player collection! Chasing cards to complete your set! We all have done it. We are chasers. We are always on the hunt to try to find that elusive card for our collection. For me, it was the 1957 Topps Mickey Mantle to complete my 1957 Topps set. For others it might be a Ken Griffey Jr. autograph. Whatever you are chasing, 2013 Topps is the year of the chase!

Topps has released information regarding several “chase” themed inserts. Chasing History, Chasing the Dream, and Cut to the Chase are just a few of the insert sets that collectors will be chasing. However, if a collector is lucky enough, that person could land one of thirty Ultimate Chase cards — hand crafted cards featuring a signature and a significant relic piece. Each numbered one of one.

Topps has promised contests centered around the pennant chase which will most likely be an online promotion. I am hopeful that the contest will be something similar to the Super Teams contest back in 1993 in which if you hold a card of a particular team and they win the pennant, you can redeem it for special prizes. Can’t wait to hear more about this as 2013 Topps goes live on January 23rd!

2013 Topps The Chase Is On

2013 Topps information was released to the masses yesterday and I for one am excited to hear all about it. Here is what Topps has to say….

Baseball is all about THE CHASE…

Check out the top 2013 Topps card listed on ebay so far (Hint: There’s something fishy about this card)

The chase for the pennant, the chase for records, the chase for history. Card-collecting is also about the chase – for the Rookie card, for the autograph, for the white whale. 2013 TOPPS BASEBALL SERIES 1 celebrates The Chase in all its glory, with cards recognizing great players’ chases both past and present, contests centered around the pennant chase and others, and some of the most amazing chase cards ever to be found in a card product. With 1 AUTO or RELIC PER HOBBY BOX and 1 AUTO and 2 RELICS PER HTA BOX, 2013 TOPPS BASEBALL SERIES 1 gives everyone something to chase!

2013 Topps Series One will release around January 23, 2013. The product configuration hasn’t changed as hobby boxes will contain 36 packs of 10 cards per pack while Home Team Advantage (Jumbo) boxes will contain 10 packs of 50 cards each.

The 2013 Topps Series 1 Baseball will continue to have a 330-card base set which Topps has had since 2006. In addition to the base cards there will be subsets that include Award Winners, League Leaders, Record Chasers and 2012 World Series Highlights.

The base cards have one of the best designs in years. The borders are white so there will not be any chipping problems as there have been in the past when Topps has used black borders as in the 1971 and 2007 Topps sets. The team logos are very prominent on the card although some people have complained that the player’s position is missing from the front of the card. The pictures are large and close up. Some people have asked what the dot is above the player’s name. If you look closely, you will see that it is home plate which is part of a baseball diamond design which borders the picture.

The base cards can be found in several different parallels. These parallels make it fun for player collectors to chase. Set collectors will not nexessarily go after all of the different variations because some are too scarce, however most Topps parallel collectors will go after the Gold and emerald sets. New for 2013 Topps baseball is the inclusion of Desert Camo parallels and Pink parallels. These parallels help promote awareness of remembering those heroes who have fought for our country or have fought breast cancer. Here is the breakdown of the different parallels:

2013 Topps Emerald Foil Felix Hernandez

2013 Topps Emerald Foil Felix Hernandez (Found one in six packs)

2013 Topps Gold Justin Verlander

2013 Topps Gold Justin Verlander (Numbered to 2013)

Printing Plates (each of the four plates are serially numbered 1 of 1, hobby and hta only)

Platinum (serially numbered 1 of 1)

Silk Collection (serially numbered to 50 – a 100-card partial parallel, hobby and hta only)

There are several inserts to “chase” in 2013 Topps. These insert sets will make the chase even more fun for collectors:

Chasing History
Chasing the Dream
Cut to the Chase
The Greats
Calling Cards
1972 Topps Minis

Chasing History inserts showcase active and retired players who are chasing or have chased history. There are 50 cards in this set highlighted by Tony Gwynn, Reggie Jackson, and Mike Schmidt.

Another insert set, Chasing the Dream, feature 25 young talents who have the potential to be considered among baseball’s elite. Mike Trout, Yu Darvish, and Bryce Harper are showcased in this set.

Cut to the Chase inserts use die-cut technology on Topps patented Chrome process to create 25 stunning eye-catching cards. Players featured in this set are Josh Hamilton, Yu Darvish, and Babe Ruth.

The Greats insert set is rightfully named since it contains thirty of the greatest players to ever play the game. Players include Johnny Bench, Derek Jeter, and Willie Mays. These insert cards can only be found in hobby and HTA packs. There is a gold parallel of this insert set serially numbered to 99.

The Calling Cards insert set feature 15 players and the routines they are known for. For example, when Albert Pujols hits a home run he will “point to the sky” as seen in the pic below. Other players in this set include Pablo Sandoval, David Ortiz, and CC Sabathia.

A popular insert from 2012 Topps, the 1987 Topps Minis, makes its return to 2013 Topps but instead of using 1988 which most collectors expected, Topps decided to throw a curveball and retro back to 1972. This insert set will most likely consist of 50 cards for series one.

And there you have it! 2013 Topps looks to be a very popular product. One thing that seems to be omitted at the present time is the lack of an online promotion. Back in 2010, Topps had the Million Card Giveaway which really added value to an already great product. In 2011, it was the Diamond promotion followed by the gold promotion of 2012. In 2013, the theme is all about the “chase”. Sounds like to me if Topps wants us to be chasing something, I am sure they will come up with a promotion that allows us to do just that. Can’t wait for January — 2013 Topps will surely be a fun one to collect!!

January 2013 — the chase is on! :)
